01. Fungus: Compost heap fungus. (aspergillus glaucus)
Electron microscopy

The fungus Aspergillus glaucus growing on bread in a compost heap. Aspergillus is a mould most often found growing on breads and jams. Here, two heads containing numerous chains of conidiospores (small, round) can be seen in upper frame.
They are supported by stalk-like condiophores attached to the branching hyphae. When ripe, conidiospores are easily dislodged by air currents or physical contact. Coloured scanning electron micrograph, Magnification: x140 and x1,400.
